Rachmaninov manuscript sells for £1.2m

Rachmaninov manuscript sells for £1.2m

Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony in E Minor, Op.27The Second Symphony is considered to be one of Rachmaninov's greatest compositions

A manuscript handwritten by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov of his Second Symphony in E Minor, Op 27, has sold at auction for £1.2m.
The 320-page score was presumed lost after its premiere in St Petersburg in 1908, until it was discovered in a private collection in 2004.
It is thought to be the only surviving handwritten manuscript of the symphony in existence.
The Second is considered to be Rachmaninov's greatest symphony.
Sotheby's said the manuscript was bought by a private collector.
Composed in Dresden, where the composer lived from 1906 - 1909, it was created for a series of concerts run by Rachmaninov's cousin.
After the first performances in St Petersburg and Moscow, it is believed the orchestration was revised, making the manuscript the last remaining evidence of Rachmaninov's original vision.
The full orchestral score features many differences from later scores, and it is notated in black ink with numerous deletions, corrections and annotations throughout, including a few bars of new music.
The manuscript was previously due to go up for sale at Sotheby's in 2004, but was withdrawn after members of Rachmaninov's family claimed to be the true owners, saying there was no evidence of the composer ever having sold it during his lifetime.
A settlement was later agreed in 2005 and the score has since been on display at the British Library.

Joss Stone death plotters win appeal

Kevin Liverpool (l) and Junior Bradshaw (r)Kevin Liverpool (left) had his minimum term cut by more than four years and Junior Bradshaw's 18-year sentence was reduced to 10

Two men convicted of plotting to kill UK singer Joss Stone have won appeals that will reduce their jail terms.
Junior Bradshaw, 33, and Kevin Liverpool, 36, both from Manchester were convicted of conspiracy to murder and rob the singer at her Devon home.
Liverpool, originally given life with a minimum term of 10 years and eight months, has had the tariff reduced to six-and-a-half years.
Bradshaw's 18-year sentence was cut to 10 years by Court of Appeal judges.
The men, both of St Stephen's Close, Longsight, had previously staked out Miss Stone's home and were on their way to attack her when they were arrested in Cullompton, Devon, in June 2011.
Miss Stone was at home in Ashill when the pair were detained, Exeter Crown Court heard during their trial.
They were both found guilty of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to rob, following the three-week hearing.
Joss StoneJoss Stone was at her Devon home when the pair were arrested nearby
The pair had loaded a car with two hammers, gaffer tape, a metal spike, lock knives, gloves and a balaclava before they drove to Devon, on June 13, 2011.
However, the trial was told the pair crashed their car north of Bristol and then got lost as they hunted for Miss Stone's home.
Residents who spotted their damaged car being driven in a suspicious manner called police and the pair were stopped and arrested .
At the defendants' appeal hearing, lawyers representing Liverpool argued a life sentence was wrong, while Bradshaw's legal team said he had been enlisted into the plan by Liverpool.
Giving the court's judgment, Lady Justice Macur said it was "clear" Liverpool's life term was justified but given the lack of physical and psychological harm caused, the minimum term was too long.
She said that as Bradshaw was treated "as a foot soldier", a reduction in sentence should also be made.
Given time spent in custody and the shorter jail terms, Liverpool could be free by 2017 and Bradshaw by 2016.

Copyright row over Led Zeppelin classic Stairway to Heaven

A legal dispute faces the band Led Zeppelin over the song Stairway to Heaven, widely seen as one of the greatest rock compositions of all time.
The copyright infringement action is being taken on behalf of late guitarist Randy California, who played on the same bill as Led Zeppelin in the 1960s.
His lawyers say that he should be given a writing credit on the 1971 track.
Bloomberg Businessweek said that the eight-minute song had earned $562m (£334m) as of 2008.
The magazine says that the song was so profitable in part because Led Zeppelin did not release it as a single, leaving fans with no option but to buy the entire album, which is untitled but known as Led Zeppelin IV.

Media reports say that the court case is likely to be based on allegations that the famous Stairway to Heaven opening guitar riff loosely resembles guitar work on an instrumental called Taurus.
Taurus was written by Randy California's Los Angeles-based psychedelic band, Spirit, in 1968.
The plaintiffs include Spirit's founding bassist Mark Andes and a trust that manages royalties for Randy California, who died in 1997 trying to save his son from drowning.
'It is fairly blatant, and note for note," Mr Andes told Bloomberg Businessweek. "It would just be nice if the Led Zeppelin guys gave Randy a little nod. That would be lovely."
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is reputed to have begun writing Stairway to Heaven in 1970 in a remote cottage in Wales.
Earlier this month the band unveiled two previously unheard recordings ahead of the re-issue in June of its first four albums.
Jimmy Page, now 70, meanwhile has scotched rumours of a reunion concert.
For a band that broke up in 1980, following the death of the drummer John Bonham, interest in Led Zeppelin remains intense.
The surviving members reunited seven years ago for a concert at London's O2 arena.

Timberlake's haul of awards included top artist and Billboard 200 album.
Imagine Dragons won five and Pharrell, Robin Thicke and TI each won four.

Many artists performed remotely as they were on tour including Perry - who was in Scotland - and Miley Cyrus, who sang her cover of The Beatles track Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds from the UK, with Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips.
Accepting the award for top streaming artist Cyrus thanked her "amazing fans" before sticking her tongue out.

The biggest moment of the show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena came when the Michael Jackson hologram took over the stage, accompanied by dancers, beaming lights and blasts of fire - the result of several months planning.
"We tried to do as best we could what we thought Michael would have loved, and those of us who knew Michael really well, we had a good perspective on it," said Epic Records CEO LA Reid.
Reid worked on the new posthumous album, which topped the UK charts on Sunday.
He added: "But the truth is, you can't ever really know because he wasn't there."
Fans voted to give the Milestone Award to Carrie Underwood, who teamed up with fellow country star Miranda Lambert for a performance.
Imagine Dragons were happy to accept their five awards - which included top group and rock artist, in their home town of Las Vegas.
"We wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for people that believed in our band, in our small band that started here in Las Vegas from the very beginning," said frontman Dan Reynolds.

Lorde performed her new hit Tennis Court and was a double winner - taking the prizes for best new artist and rock song for Royals.
"This whole thing started for me with a song that was written when I was 15, which I know everyone knows, but what I want to say is I am 17 and a half now and I'm so thankful," she said.
"That wasn't a joke," she added as the crowd laughed. "I'm so thankful that I've had the opportunity to learn and grow as a new artist in the spotlight."
Robin Thicke performed a new song Get Her Back and paid tribute to estranged wife Paula Patton as he collected top R&B song for Blurred Lines.
"Most importantly I'd like to thank my wife for her love and support and for putting up with me all these years," he told the crowd.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Kendall Jenner fared less well on stage, fumbling her words while introducing Australian boyband 5 Seconds of Summer.
"And now we welcome ... One ...'' she said, appearing to be about to say One Direction, before explaining "Guys, I'm the worst reader."

Actor Oscar Isaac has confirmed filming on the new Star Wars movie will commence later this month.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Front Row, the 34-year-old said: "The whole process is under way. We're shooting in the studios up here in London."
Isaac was one of the new cast members announced for the film in April, alongside Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.
Isaac, recently seen in Inside Llewyn Davis, said his family were "very excited" by his latest role.
"My uncle and my cousin have galleries of the Star Wars toys they've collected," he told Kirsty Lang.
"So once I told them I had been cast, he nearly fainted, my uncle. He got sweaty and pale. He was very excited.
"The idea that I could be a toy for him is the craziest thing."
Star Wars castA picture of the new Star Wars cast was released by director JJ Abrams last month
Little is known about Isaac's role in Star Wars: Episode VII, and the actor admitted he was under strict orders not to reveal details.
However he spoke about being cast in the movie by director JJ Abrams, saying he had been called to a meeting in Paris earlier this year.

Oscar Isaac
"I'm a huge Star Wars fan but at the same time I'm defensively pessimistic, so I assumed that maybe it was a different project," he said.
Once Abrams confirmed the meeting was about Star Wars, Isaac said he "tried to play it cool - but, I mean, it was clear I was just so excited he wanted me to be a part of the whole thing."
The actor also confessed he used to dress up as characters from the outer space blockbuster franchise as a child.
"Not as a Jedi Knight," he stressed, "but I dressed up as a gonk droid a couple of times.
"I liked the tertiary characters or the ones you don't necessarily look at. I was a huge Boba Fett fan."
Isaac will step into his actual Star Wars costume for the first time at Pinewood studios. Location shoots are also rumoured to be taking place in Morocco and Tunisia later this year.
The film will be the first Star Wars title released by Disney, after creator George Lucas sold the rights to the franchise in 2012.
It will also see the return of the three principal characters from the original trilogy - Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford).
The Two Faces Of JanuaryIsaac's currently stars in The Two Faces Of January, alongside Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst
Earlier this year, Guatemalan-born Isaac was nominated for several awards, including a best actor Golden Globe, for starring in the Coen Brothers' folk music drama Inside Llewyn Davis.
He told Front Row the accolades led directly to his latest role, in the thriller The Two Faces of January.
"Early on, before I'd been cast in Llewyn Davies, [director Hossein Amini] had shown me the script because we'd worked together on Drive.
"At the time there was very little chance I'd be cast - but once I was cast in Llewyn Davies, that opened up a lot of doors."
Laughing, he added: "They couldn't get the money to make the movie with some weirdo named Oscar."
"It's kind of crazy that's how it works, but that's how it's worked for a very long time."

Jay Z, his wife Beyonce and her sister Solange say they are a "united family" despite a fight seen in a leaked video.
The video, which was leaked to US celebrity website TMZ, showed Solange lashing out at Jay Z in a lift after the Met Gala on 5 May.
"Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred," said a joint statement.
"They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family."
The hotel employee who leaked the footage has been identified and dismissed, it emerged on Thursday.
New York's Standard Hotel said it was "shocked and disappointed" by the leak and said it would it would hand over "all available information to criminal authorities".
The employee was dismissed for "breaching the security policies of the hotel and recording the confidential CCTV video," it added.
The three-minute video shows Solange - herself an R&B singer - enter the lift with Jay Z, Beyonce and their entourage.
She then confronts the rapper, whose wife stands by without interfering.
A bodyguard holds Solange back, although she again tries to kick Jay Z. There is no audio on the recording.
The full statement was released by the family to the Associated Press.
It reads: "As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident.
"But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred.
"They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.
"The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behaviour throughout that evening are simply false.
"At the end of the day, families have problems and we're no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We've put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same."

Grace of Monaco slammed at Cannes Film Festival

Grace of Monaco slammed at Cannes Film Festival

Nicole Kidman says she does not regret her role as Grace Kelly
Early reviews of Grace of Monaco, the Grace Kelly biopic chosen to open this year's Cannes Film Festival, have slammed the film, with one describing it as "a timeless camp classic".
"It's an easy watch, lush, stylish... and is often side-splittingly funny,"Empire's Phil de Semlyen said.
"The trouble is, it's not actually meant to be a comedy."
Laughter was heard during a press screening on Wednesday morning. A gala premiere will take place later.
Set in the 1960s, Olivier Dahan's film focuses on Grace Kelly's early years as a princess when she was tempted to return to Hollywood by an offer from Alfred Hitchcock.
Tim Roth plays her husband, Prince Rainier III, with Robert Lindsay, Spain's Paz Vega and Sir Derek Jacobi filling other roles.
Nicole Kidman and Tim RothTim Roth stars as Prince Rainier III in the film
In her review, Screen Daily's Fionnuala Halligan described the film as "puzzlingly misjudged... a minor royal Euro-pudding which lands awkwardly in sub-Roman Holiday territory".
"As Grace Kelly, the retired Hollywood movie star struggling to find meaning in her life as Monaco's monarch, Kidman valiantly strains for the right notes.
"But the project... seems a poor judgment call, despite the presence of La Vie en Rose's Dahan at the helm."
Those sentiments were echoed by the Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Dalton, who called the film "a stiff, stagey, thuddingly earnest affair which has generated far more drama off screen than on".
"Is it even possible to make a boring film out of this rich, juicy, gossipy material? It would seem so," he said.
"Indeed, it is almost perversely impressive how Dahan misses almost every target and squanders almost every opportunity."
The film has been criticised by the royal family of Monaco, with Princess Stephanie of Monaco calling the film about her parents inaccurate.
At a press conference for the film on Wednesday, Kidman addressed the royal family's displeasure at the project.
"Obviously I feel sad because the film has no malice towards the family, particularly Grace and Rainier," she told reporters.
"I have respect [for how they feel] and I want them to know the performance was done with love.
"If they did see the film, they'd see there was an enormous amount of affection for both their parents."
Kidman, who was a juror at last year's festival and who also attended the event in 2012, said it was "amazing" to be in Cannes for the third consecutive year.
Grace of Monaco is playing out of competition at this year's festival, though she joked she would give it the Palme d'Or - Cannes' highest accolade - were she still to have a say in the matter.
"I'm always looking for things that put me on a high wire, and this was one of those roles," the 46-year-old continued.
"She [Grace Kelly] fascinated me, and she fascinated the world. She still does."
French director Olivier Dahan in CannesDirector Dahan has dismissed reports of a rift with producer Harvey Weinstein
According to reports, Dahan also clashed over the final cut with the Weinstein Co, which is distributing the film in North America.
But the director played down suggestions that a rift existed between himself and producer Harvey Weinstein, saying there was "no longer any dispute".
"There's only one version of the film [and] Harvey will use that version," he said.
"If some changes have to be made, we will do it together."
The director admitted some scenes depicted in the film did not occur in real life, among them a visit to Monaco by Alfred Hitchcock.
"I twisted reality a little bit," he conceded. "I'm not a biographer or a historian. What I've tried to do is depict the heart of things."
"Hitchcock didn't go to Monaco himself, but he did offer [Kelly a role in] Marnie and she did want to do it," said Kidman.
According to the film, Kelly was sorely tempted to return to Hollywood but ultimately chose to do her duty and remain with her husband.
"I've never had to [give up acting for love] but I wouldn't think twice about it," said the actress, who described her own husband - US singer Keith Urban - as "a country prince".
"Love is the core emotion. Without that, it's a very empty life."
